The Gulf of Maine watershed has been shaped and affected by a complex mix of natural factors, including climate and geology. Today, these influences are overshadowed by a wide range of anthropogenic factors—including population growth, economic growth, pollution and accelerated climate change. The Watershed Status theme paper focuses on the current status of the region’s watersheds, exploring some of the many forces, pressures and impacts affecting their health. It highlights how aquatic ecosystems link communities and habitats inland with the Gulf’s estuarine, coastal and offshore environments. The Watershed Status theme paper, part of the State of the Gulf of Maine Report, is now available on the Gulf of Maine Council’s website in low-resolution (2 MB) and high-resolution (21 MB) versions.
Waterview Consulting designed the Watershed Status theme paper, as well as the other 14 papers in the State of the Gulf of Maine Report series.
